The project in Upper Thulini started at the beginning of 2018. It was well accepted in the community especially because there are no crèches in the area.
Upper Thulini is a remote area and prior to the project, most kids were left unsupervised while parents do seasonal farm work. Most households have single parents, are generally impoverished and lights and water remains a challenge.
In 2018, Kinderfonds Mamas began funding the project and, as in other communities, the focus is on holistic Early Childhood Development. Mondi sponsored the Children's Centre that was set up in the beginning of the year.
The children's centre has a food garden which serves the purpose of providing fresh vegetables to use to feed the children that are part of the programme. This allows us to feed the children with nutritious meals which is important for their growth.
Fifty children are now able to get 2 meals per day, have a safe supervised place to do their homework and some are able to attend the pre school programme.
